Coffee, croissants and comms. What could be a better way to start your day in #wonkcomms?
WonkComms have teamed up with Soapbox to offer the UK WonkComms community an regular opportunity to get together and discuss some of the big challenges of delivering communications in think tanks and research organisations.
Each Breakfast Club session covers a different topic and focuses on the practicalities of communications – whether you’re trying to improve email marketing or do better at engaging with Parliament.
Join us for the eighth session, ‘DIY data vis’ from 8.30am – 10.30am on 25 April 2017 at the Soapbox studio in central London.
Are you interested in strengthening your organisation’s capacities for data visualisations? In our ‘post fact’ era and with a snap general election just weeks away, being a source of reliable data visualisations holds even more value than before. However, for smaller or cash-strapped organisations this can often mean ‘doing it yourself’! In this Breakfast Club, we will learn the basics of creating good data visualisations, where the data stops being just numbers and starts telling stories, explaining facts and advancing arguments.
By sharing examples of what is possible, as well as a wealth of free and affordable resources, we will discuss ways to exercise editorial judgement and target your audiences carefully to create meaningful and effective data vis.
We’ll hear from Jeff Knezovich, a data visualisation expert who is also Digital Communications Manager for health think tank the Nuffield Trust and an editor of On Think Tanks. Jeff will provide an overview of the different types of data visualisation that are possible, and some of the tools available to produce them. He will also share some key tips for producing effective visualisations.
Rita Beden, External Affairs Manager at the think tank Centre for Cities, will also talk about how the organisation does data visualisation, who it’s aimed at, and where it is used.
